Brian Boyle scored for the sixth time in seven contests to snap a scoreless tie 7:35 into the third period and Henrik Lundqvist turned aside 39 shots for his fourth career postseason shutout as visiting New York claimed a 2-1 edge in its Eastern Conference quarterfinal series.

After the teams traded fruitless chances, the top-seeded Rangers finally broke through in the third period.

Defenseman Dan Girardi wristed a shot from the right point which sailed off the end boards. The puck caromed off the side of the net and right to Boyle, who backhanded a shot past Craig Anderson for his third goal of the series.

Boyle has eight tallies in his last 12 games - after managing six in his first 73 contests this season.

Lundqvist made the slim advantage stand up to snap New York's five-game road losing skid in the postseason. The Swede denied 14 shots in the third period - including a left pad save on a point-blank shot by Kyle Turris late in the game.

Anderson finished with 22 saves for the Senators, who played without Daniel Alfredsson. The captain sat out the contest after he was elbowed in the face by rookie Carl Hagelin in Game 2 on Saturday.

GAME NOTEBOOK: With Hagelin serving the first contest of his three-game suspension, Boston College's Chris Kreider made his NHL debut. He became the first member of the Rangers to make his debut in a postseason game since Lauri Korpikoski did so in 2008. Kreider was paired with Brad Richards and Marian Gaborik on the top line, before being shuffled with other players. ... Ottawa has lost its last seven home playoff games.
