CAPITALS 4, RANGERS 1: Nicklas Backstrom had a goal and an assist to give visiting Washington momentum heading into the playoffs with its fourth win in the final five games.

With the victory, the Capitals moved into seventh in the Eastern Conference standings and will face the Boston Bruins in the opening round of the playoffs.

Alex Ovechkin tallied his 38th goal just 32 seconds into the first period to give the Capitals the early 1-0 lead.

Mathieu Perreault redirected a point shot by Roman Hamrlik past Henrik Lundqvist just 1:46 later to make it 2-0 for Washington on just its second shot of the contest.

John Carlson capped a three-goal frame with a blast through a screen on the power play to pad the lead. Backstrom added his first goal since Dec. 30 at 5:58 of the second period to put New York in a 4-0 hole.

Brian Boyle tallied the lone goal for New York, which heads to the postseason losers of two straight. The Rangers can still clinch the Presidents' Trophy if the Vancouver Canucks lose in regulation to the Edmonton Oilers later Saturday night.

Washington's third-string goaltender Braden Holtby made 35 saves to earn his fourth win.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Capitals goaltenders Michal Neuvirth (leg) and Tomas Vokoun (groin) didn't play. ... The Rangers are the top team in the East for the first time since 1994, when they won their last Stanley Cup. ... Lundqvist allowed four goals on 17 shots.
