: Brooks Laich scored in the fourth round of the shootout as visiting Washington stayed in the hunt for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Laich fooled Tim Thomas with a quick move to the backhand, firing the puck top corner, following a pad save from Michal Neuvirth on Rich Peverley.

Washington, which entered Thursday in ninth place in the East, won for just the third time in the last eight games.

After two uneventful periods, Washington opened the scoring when Dennis Wideman took a feed from Marcus Johansson in the slot and beat Thomas high glove side at 7:59 of the third period.

The Capitals jumped ahead 2-0 just under two minutes later when Alex Ovechkin connected with Johansson on a two-on-one, breaking his stick as he fired the puck past a sprawling Thomas.

Boston got on the board when David Krejci redirected a soft shot from Zdeno Chara at 16:50 of the third period. The Bruins scored the tying goal one minute and 54 seconds later when Andrew Ference blasted a rocket from the point.

Boston had its three-game winning streak snapped and missed an opportunity to clinch a playoff spot.

Capitals goalie Tomas Vokoun returned after missing 13 days with a groin strain but was forced to leave with 1:35 remaining in the first period after tweaking the injury. Neuvirth came on in relief, making 19 saves.

: Bruins D Dennis Seidenberg sat out with an infection in his leg. … Ovechkin had two assists and has 14 points in last 10 games. … Boston D Adam McQuaid was injured after getting hit from behind in the first period.
