: Rookie Andrew Shaw scored two goals and set up another while Bryan Bickell added a tally and two assists as Chicago topped Washington to improve to 7-1-1 in its last nine games.

Viktor Stalberg and Patrick Kane also scored and Corey Crawford made 16 saves for the Blackhawks, who have earned at least one point in each of their last five contests (4-0-1). Chicago began the day four points behind Nashville for fifth place in the Western Conference.

Shaw opened the scoring 3:35 into the game when he buried a rebound from the high slot, and Stalberg made it 2-0 less than 4 1/2 minutes later with a wrist shot.

Mike Knuble halved the deficit early in the second as his shot from the top of the slot deflected off a defender's stick and past Crawford for his second goal in three games. Knuble has just five tallies in 63 contests this season.

Kane restored Chicago's two-goal advantage at 7:57 with his third in five games. Andrew Brunette made a cross-slot pass from the bottom of the left faceoff circle to Kane, who fired the puck into a vacant net to extend his points streak to five matches.

Shaw completed his first career two-goal performance with 8 1/2 minutes remaining as he came out from behind the net and slid the puck past Michal Neuvirth, giving the Blackhawks a 4-1 lead.

Alex Ovechkin scored his 30th goal with 5 1/2 minutes left in the session to draw the Capitals within two.

After getting the puck in front of his own net, the superstar skated up the left wing. Ovechkin made a nifty move in the left circle, putting the puck between his own legs in order to get past Blackhawks defenseman Duncan Keith, and ripped it past Crawford.

Bickell sealed the win and capped his first career three-point effort with an empty-netter with 1:48 remaining in the third.

Neuvirth stopped 24 shots for the Capitals, who fell to 1-2-0 on their five-game road trip. Washington entered the day two points ahead of Winnipeg and idle Buffalo for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
