PREDATORS 5, COYOTES 4 (SO): Andrei Kostitsyn scored the lone goal of the shootout in the first round and Pekka Rinne denied all three shooters he faced as Nashville won the opener of its four-game road trip.

Martin Erat recorded a goal and two assists, Mike Fisher, defenseman Francois Bouillon and Craig Smith also scored and Rinne made 31 saves for the Predators, who improved to 8-2-1 in their last 11 games.

After Rinne stopped Ray Whitney on the Coyotes' first attempt, Kostitsyn slid the puck between Mike Smith's pads to give Nashville the advantage. Rinne then thwarted Radim Vrbata and Mikkel Boedker to give the Predators their third win in four road contests.

Erat began his second three-point performance of the season with 29 seconds remaining in the first period when he took a drop pass from Sergei Kostitsyn and beat Mike Smith from the right faceoff circle for a 1-0 lead.

Daymond Langkow tied the contest 49 seconds into the second session with his second goal in 22 games, but Fisher and Bouillon sandwiched tallies around one by Phoenix blueliner Keith Yandle later in the period as the Predators grabbed a 3-2 advantage.

Craig Smith doubled the lead just over 2 1/2 minutes into the third when he beat Mike Smith with a backhander on a breakaway. The Coyotes refused to quit, however, as defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson buried a wrist shot from the blue line at 7:11 and Langkow's shot from the left of the crease caromed in off Raffi Torres with five minutes remaining.

Mike Smith made 31 saves for Phoenix, which completed a 1-0-2 homestand. The Coyotes are one point ahead of eighth-place Colorado in the Western Conference but trail Pacific Division-leading Dallas by only two.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Bouillon's goal was his first of the season. He scored only once last campaign, also against Phoenix on Nov. 3, 2010. ... Erat has three tallies in his last four games and Fisher three in five contests. ... The Coyotes have lost six of their last seven games overall and nine of 11 against Central Division opponents. ... The road team has won each of the last six meetings.
