RANGERS 4, ISLANDERS 3 (OT): All-Star Marian Gaborik scored a power-play goal 4:54 into overtime as the host Rangers ended a three-game losing skid by rallying past the Islanders.
Brad Richards netted a pair with the man advantage and Brian Boyle also tallied for the Rangers, who remained four points ahead of hard-charging Pittsburgh. The Penguins won their season-best ninth straight game with a 5-2 home triumph over Boston on Sunday.
With defenseman Travis Hamonic whistled for a tripping penalty, Gaborik made the Islanders pay in overtime. Gaborik netted his 33rd - and seventh game-winning goal - with a wrist shot from the slot that handcuffed Evgeni Nabokov, who was playing in his 600th career NHL game.
All-Star John Tavares scored for the second consecutive contest and Matt Moulson and defenseman Andrew MacDonald also tallied for the Islanders, who dropped their third in a row and sit 10 points behind eighth-place Washington in the Eastern Conference.
The Rangers leveled the contest for the third time just 3:29 into the third period. Defenseman Ryan McDonagh's wrist shot from the point deflected off Boyle in front and past Nabokov.
MacDonald had given the Islanders a 3-2 lead with 36 seconds remaining in the second period.
Exiting the penalty box after serving a holding penalty, MacDonald accepted Tavares' lead pass and wristed a shot just inside the post for his fifth goal - and second in three contests.
