AVALANCHE 5, BLUE JACKETS 0: David Jones had two goals and an assist and Semyon Varlamov turned aside 28 shots for his third shutout as visiting Colorado continued its dominance over Columbus.

Rookie Gabriel Landeskog and Steve Downie each had a goal and an assist to lift the Avalanche to their ninth win in the last 10 meetings with the Blue Jackets.

Varlamov, making his fourth consecutive start, registered his seventh career shutout and won his 17th game to extend his career-high victory total.

Columbus was playing its first game since trading away centers Jeff Carter and Antoine Vermette, putting more pressure on an already-punchless offense.

Jones opened the scoring with 26 seconds left in the first period, leading a 2-on-1 break and beating Steve Mason from the right faceoff dot.

Landeskog doubled the lead just past the midway point of the second period, blasting a slap shot that beat Mason glove side to the top corner for his fifth goal in eight games.

Jones scored his second goal at 1:35 of the third period, giving him five tallies in 10 career games against the Blue Jackets.

Downie, acquired in a trade from Tampa Bay on Tuesday, and Matt Hunwick each added their first goals of the season for the Avalanche.
