Henrik Zetterberg scored for the third time in four games and Joey MacDonald turned aside 20 shots as the Detroit Red Wings recorded their NHL-best 21st consecutive home victory on Tuesday with a 3-1 triumph over the Dallas Stars.
Defenseman Brad Stuart and Jiri Hudler also scored for Detroit, which moved past the 1929-30 Boston Bruins and the 1975-76 Philadelphia Flyers for the honor. The Red Wings have won four in a row and remained one point ahead of the New York Rangers for the most points in the NHL with 80.
Adam Burish ended MacDonald's bid for his first shutout of the season and third career by scoring with 33 seconds left in the third period. By that time, the crowd at the Joe Louis Arena was already chanting "21" as the record victory was within sight.
Detroit has enjoyed fast starts during its streak - outscoring the opposition by a 31-9 mark in the first period.
With his team on the power play, Zetterberg opened the scoring 7:57 into the game after collecting his own rebound off an attempted centering feed before beating Kari Lehtonen.
Stuart doubled the advantage just 1:18 later. Darren Helm won an offensive zone faceoff and Stuart wired a shot through traffic and past Lehtonen for his fifth goal of the season.
