All-Star Henrik Lundqvist turned aside a season-high 42 shots for his league-leading seventh shutout of the season and captain Ryan Callahan scored his sixth goal in four games as the New York Rangers breezed to a 3-0 victory over the host Boston Bruins on Tuesday.
Defenseman Ryan McDonagh tallied for the second straight contest and Artem Anisimov scored for his 100th career point for New York, which improved to 8-1-1 in its last 10 games and extended its lead to nine points over Boston in the Eastern Conference.
Lundqvist, who recorded his 42nd career shutout, improved to 18-5-2 with six blankings versus the Bruins. The 29-year-old Swede nearly lost his shutout midway through the third period when defenseman Dennis Seidenberg's blast found the net. A subsequent review, however, showed that the puck actually sailed wide of the goal and became lodged in the side of the net.
With his team on the power play, Callahan opened the scoring 10:09 into the first period after redirecting defenseman Michael Del Zotto's centering feed past reigning Vezina Trophy winner Tim Thomas. Callahan's 23rd goal of the season matched his career high, which was set last season.
McDonagh doubled the advantage with 11.8 seconds remaining after wiring a shot which deflected off Bruins captain Zdeno Chara's skate before finding the back of the net.
Anisimov capped the scoring 2:53 into the third period by finishing off a 2-on-1 rush to send Boston to its fourth loss in six games.
