Joe Pavelski had two goals and two assists and captain Joe Thornton collected three assists as the San Jose Sharks defeated the host Washington Capitals 5-3 on Monday.

The Sharks, playing their second of nine straight road games, dominated most of the game in helping coach Todd McLellan earn his 183rd victory in his 300th NHL game behind the bench.

Ryane Clowe scored his 11th goal of the season on the power play after Thornton set him up at 7:03 of the third period to give the Sharks a 5-1 lead.

Moments earlier, Brent Burns scored his eighth of the season when his point shot beat a screened Braden Holtby.

The Capitals’ Roman Hamrlik scored his second of the season with a backhand shot at 10:22 and Jeff Schultz tallied his first of the season at 14:09 of the third period to make it 5-3, but the comeback stalled there.

Dmitry Orlov put the Capitals on the board with his second goal of the season at 19:59 of the middle frame after Thomas Greiss got a piece of his point shot but the puck trickled across the goal line.

Earlier in the frame, Marleau scored his 21st of the season when he buried a loose puck in the crease on the power play to give the Sharks a 3-0 lead.

Pavelski gave the Sharks a 2-0 lead with his second goal at 3:26 of the second period. His 22nd of the season came on the power play after finishing off a rebound of Logan Couture's shot.

Pavelski scored his first at 12:12 of the first period on one of the flukiest goals of the season. Defenseman Dan Boyle stepped into a shot just as he crossed his own blue line and Pavelski got a stick on it near the Capitals blue line. The deflection bounced past Holtby, making his first start of the season for the Capitals.
