Recap
Martin Hanzal scored a pair of goals and Boyd Gordon added a shorthanded tally as the Phoenix Coyotes skated to a 3-1 home victory over the league-leading Detroit Red Wings on Monday.
Ray Whitney recorded two assists and Mike Smith made 30 saves for Phoenix, which completed a 3-2-1 homestand and halted a six-game losing streak against Central Division opponents.
Gordon opened the scoring less than 7 1/2 minutes into the game with a shorthanded goal. After poking the puck ahead at his own blue line, Gordon raced past two defenders and beat Joey MacDonald on a breakaway for his sixth of the season.
Phoenix doubled its lead at 6:55 of the second when Ray Whitney's shot from the left faceoff dot deflected off Hanzal and past a screened MacDonald during a power play.
Johan Franzen halved the deficit late in the session with a man-advantage goal as he converted a pass from behind the net by Henrik Zetterberg for his 20th tally. But Hanzal scored into an empty net in the final minute of the third to seal the win.
MacDonald stopped 20 shots for the Red Wings, who went 2-2-1 on their five-game road trip.
