Shawn Matthias scored the go-ahead goal early in the third period and the Florida Panthers extended Montreal's woes with a 3-2 victory over the visiting Canadiens on Saturday night.

Tomas Fleischmann scored a pair of goals and Scott Clemmensen came off the bench to make 17 saves as the Panthers handed the reeling Canadiens their seventh loss in eight games.

The game had a bit of everything to send the year out with a bang: The ejection of Florida's Krys Barch for allegedly hurling a racial slur at Montreal's P.K. Subban, a leg injury that forced Panthers netminder Jose Theodore from the game and a franchise-tying record for assists by Florida's Stephen Weiss.

There were also two goals in the final 41 seconds – an empty-netter by Fleischmann and a tally by Montreal’s Erik Cole with 30 seconds to play.

Clemmensen entered the game early in the second period when Theodore suffered a lower-body injury and blanked the Canadiens until Cole’s late goal to improve to 4-0-0 lifetime against Montreal.

The Canadiens grabbed a 1-0 lead on Travis Moen's long-range slap shot at 5:37 of the first period, ending his 12-game goalless streak.

Barch received a game misconduct at the end of the first period when linesman Darren Gibbs said he heard him utter a racial slur following a scrum between Subban and the Panthers' Erik Gudbranson, the Miami Herald reported.

Fleischmann tied it on the power play by beating Carey Price at 3:46 of the second. Weiss assisted on the tally, the 231st of his career to tie Olli Jokinen for the franchise record.

Theodore was hurt early in the second period when teammate Dmitry Kulikov landed on him while trying to fend off Montreal's Mike Blunden.
