Evgeni Malkin notched his seventh career hat trick and added two assists, while Simon Despres scored his first NHL goal as the Penguins hammered the Buffalo Sabres 8-3 Saturday in Pittsburgh.

Malkin, with his fourth career five-point game, has points in nine of 10 home games, and 12 points in his last five. Marc-Andre Fleury made 16 saves for his 200th career win.

The Penguins built an early 3-0 lead, temporarily sending goaltender Ryan Miller to the bench after facing just seven shots.

Jason Williams opened the scoring two minutes into the game with his first goal as a member of the Penguins. Despres’ marker followed four minutes later on the power play. Malkin ended Miller’s period at 9:43 with his first goal of the night.

Thomas Vanek put Buffalo on the board, but Malkin rounded out first period scoring with his second goal, and 14th on the season, to give the Pens a 4-1 lead.

Miller returned for the middle frame, but was beaten less than a minute in when Malkin, on the power play, fed a perfect pass to James Neal who one-timed his 18th goal of the season. Late in the second period, Miller gave up a weak goal to Deryk Engelland that ended his night. Pascal Dupuis picked up an assist for his 300th NHL point.

Luke Adam and Paul Gaustad tallied for the Sabres 1:24 apart to spark a third period rally that was diffused when Malkin completed the hat trick.

Chris Kunitz netted the game's last goal, his 11th of the season.
