Rookie Gabriel Landeskog scored in the fifth round on his first NHL shootout attempt as the Colorado Avalanche ended a three-game losing skid with a 3-2 victory over the visiting San Jose Sharks on Tuesday.

Milan Hejduk opened the sudden-death format with a deke move that froze San Jose netminder Antti Niemi, allowing Hejduk to fire the puck into a gaping net. San Jose's Joe Pavelski scored in the third round to keep the Sharks alive, but Colorado went back in front after Landeskog beat Niemi with a wrist shot.

The Sharks looked to extend the game, but Brad Winchester hit the post as the Sharks fell for the seventh time in nine outings.

With the score tied 2-2, Matt Duchene put the Avalanche in front on a power play at 11:51 of the third period with a wrist shot that eluded Niemi. It was his team-high 11th goal of the season, but only his second in the last 10 games.

San Jose put on the pressure in the final minute and was rewarded with 22 seconds remaining when Patrick Marleau redirected Logan Couture's shot to end a seven-game goalless drought.

Stefan Elliott and Daniel Winnik had the other regulation goals for the Avalanche.

Jamie McGinn and Dan Boyle countered for the Sharks. Boyle's goal was only his second in 28 games this season.
