Brian Elliott turned aside 27 shots to win for the sixth time in seven starts and St. Louis improved to 9-2-3 under coach Ken Hitchcock.

Alex Steen scored a power-play goal and Jason Arnott had a pair of assists as the Blues sent Detroit to its second straight loss following a seven-game winning streak.

Backes put the Blues ahead on the power play only 45 seconds into the third, steering a pass from T.J. Oshie past Jimmy Howard, who had his personal seven-game winning streak snapped.

Berglund doubled the lead 1:53 later, whipping a blistering slap shot past Howard as St. Louis beat the Wings for the third straight time dating to last season.

Danny Cleary scored with the man advantage with 80 seconds to play to draw the Red Wings within 3-2, but Detroit was unable to get the equalizer.

Johan Franzen's NHL-leading eighth power-play goal gave Detroit a 1-0 lead at 7:42 of the second period, but the Blues responded with the man advantage less than two minutes later.

Arnott won the faceoff back to Steen, who teed up a shot and beat Howard five-hole only four seconds into the power play. Steen has tallied twice against the Red Wings this season after failing to score against them in 18 previous career games.
