Recap
Goaltender Brian Elliott came up with another big performance and the St. Louis Blues killed off all six power plays, including a five-minute major, in a 2-1 victory over the visiting Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday.
Elliott made 21 saves to improve his record to 7-1 as the Blues extended their unbeaten streak (3-0-1) to four under new coach Ken Hitchcock. Matt D’Agostini and Alexander Steen delivered the goals as St. Louis snapped Detroit’s four-game win streak.
The Blues pushed the pace in the second period, outshooting the Red Wings 19-9 – including 13-2 in the final 14 minutes. Steen gave St. Louis the 2-1 lead, swiping a poor clearing pass by Johan Franzen and whipping a wrist shot past Detroit goalie Jimmy Howard at 10:16. It was Steen’s first-ever goal against the Wings in 19 games.
After Drew Miller gave Detroit the lead 6:07 into the game, St. Louis power forward Chris Stewart received a five-minute major and game misconduct for hitting defenseman Niklas Kronwall from behind into the side boards at 11:14. Kronwall was taken to the locker room but late returned.
The Blues gained momentum from the kill and tied the game 1-1 on the power play as D’Agostini found a loose puck in the slot and beat Howard at 17:19 for the first.
