Recap
Martin Hanzal scored twice and goaltender Mike Smith continued his mastery of the Ducks as the Phoenix Coyotes held on to defeat host Anaheim 5-4 on Sunday.
Smith made 29 saves and improved to 4-0-1 against Anaheim as Phoenix (3-3-1) broke a 2-2 tie and chased Ducks goaltender Jonas Hiller with unanswered goals in the second period by Boyd Gordon, Lauri Korpikoski and Keith Yandle.
Hiller, who entered the game with a 1.97 goals-against average, allowed five on Phoenix’s first 19 shots. He was replaced by Dan Ellis after Yandle’s goal at 7:56 of the second period.
Captain Ryan Getzlaf scored his first two goals of the season, and Kurtis Foster and Lubomir Visnovsky also had goals for the Ducks (4-3-0), who have lost two straight after winning four in a row. Ellis stopped all 16 shots he faced.
Getzlaf's second goal came with 1:08 left.
Smith's best stop came midway through the third period when he robbed Bobby Ryan with his outstretched right arm along the ice to protect a 5-3 lead.
Hanzal’s goals were sandwiched around tallies by Visnovsky and Getzlaf in the high-scoring first period.
Saku Koivu had an assist for his 100th career point with Anaheim.
Phoenix’s Andy Miele, who won the 2011 Hobey Baker Award with Miami (Ohio), made his NHL debut and had one shot in 6:21 of ice time.
