Tomas Vokoun made 20 saves as the Washington Capitals defeated the visiting Florida Panthers 3-0 on Tuesday and set a franchise record with their fifth straight victory to start the season.
Vokoun, who played the last four years with the Panthers, earned his 45th career shutout and first with the Capitals.
Marcus Johansson scored in the first period, and Alexander Semin had a goal and an assist on Jason Chimera’s empty-net goal in the third. It was Chimera’s team-leading fourth goal.
Florida goalie Jacob Markstrom was solid in his first start of the season and second NHL appearance. The 21-year old stopped 20 of 21 shots in the first two periods to keep the Panthers (3-2-0) in it.
Johansson scored his third of the season 4:24 into the game on the power play, sneaking a shot just inside the right post from a bad angle. Washington outshot Florida, playing its third game in four nights, 11-2 in the first period.
Dennis Wideman had an assist on Semin’s goal, giving him a point in all five games.
Florida went with seven defensemen in the lineup as forward Sean Bergenheim was scratched with a minor injury. Defenseman Keaton Ellerby played his first game this season for the Panthers.
