Recap
Ilya Kovalchuk and Zach Parise scored in the shootout to lift the New Jersey Devils to a 2-1 victory over the visiting Los Angeles Kings on Thursday night.
Johan Hedberg, playing in relief of an injured Martin Brodeur, turned aside both shots in the shootout and had 20 saves in regulation for his second win of the season.
Patrik Elias scored his first goal of the season at 13:03 of the opening period to knot it at 1-1 after Simon Gagne had given the Kings a 1-0 lead just 1:47 into the contest by beating Brodeur with a backhander.
Kings netminder Jonathan Quick had his three-game winning streak snapped against New Jersey despite making 36 saves.
Brodeur appeared to be hurt when he was struck by a shot with about eight minutes to go in the opening period. He stayed in the game but was replaced by Hedberg to start the second period due to upper body soreness.
It was the first game played in North America for the Kings, who went 1-1 on their two-game European tour.
