Joni Pitkanen scored on the power play and Cam Ward made 27 saves for his first win of the season as the Carolina Hurricanes edged the visiting Boston Bruins 3-2 on Wednesday.

Anthony Stewart and Jiri Tlusty each added their first goals for the Hurricanes.

The defending champion Bruins have dropped three of four to begin the season while averaging one goal in the setbacks.

Carolina struck first, taking advantage of a hooking penalty on Chris Kelly at the end of the first period with a goal in the opening minute of the second.

Working the puck around the outside, Pitkanen found himself alone with some space at the right faceoff circle and sent a wrister through traffic, getting it through the legs of Tim Thomas.

Stewart’s tally early in the third period made it 2-0 before Boston finally got on the board with Tyler Seguin’s first goal.

Tlusty’s tally with 6:28 left proved to be the game-winner before Brad Marchand pulled the Bruins back within a goal with less than four minutes remaining.

Ward made nine saves in the third period to close it out.
