Recap
Joe Pavelski scored a pair of power-play goals and Andrew Desjardins also tallied twice as the San Jose Sharks opened their 2011-12 season Saturday with a 6-3 triumph over the visiting Phoenix Coyotes.
Michal Handzus and Ryane Clowe each added a goal while Patrick Marleau notched two assists for San Jose, which has won 10 of its last 11 meetings with Phoenix.
Pavelski opened the scoring four minutes into the game, beating Mike Smith from the doorstep for the first of the Sharks' three man-advantage goals of the night, and gave San Jose a 5-1 advantage with 3:06 remaining in the second period.
Desjardins, who scored on a breakaway 8 1/2 minutes into the first, completed his first career two-goal performance late in the second with a bad-angle shot from below the left faceoff circle.
Thomas Greiss made 26 saves for the Sharks, who registered 50 shots in extending their home winning streak against Phoenix to six games. Greiss got the start as both Antti Niemi and Antero Niittymaki recover from injuries.
Captain Shane Doan scored twice on the power play and defenseman Keith Yandle had two assists for the Coyotes, who had won five straight season openers.
