Alexander Semin scored three third-period goals and added a pair of assists to lead the Washington Capitals to their sixth consecutive victory with a 6-3 decision over the visiting Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday night.
Semin now has 12 goals on the season and three more than Alex Ovechkin, who also scored and had two assists in a four-goal third period for Washington.
Nicklas Backstrom chipped in with four assists to cap a great performance from Washington’s top three forwards.
Veteran Mike Knuble and defenseman Tom Poti also scored for the Capitals, who saw Michal Neuvirth turned aside 38 shots as he won his NHL-best 10th game of the campaign.
Steven Stamkos scored his 14th goal of the season for the Lightning and assisted on Ryan Malone’s marker early in the third to tie the game at 2-2 before Semin broke out with his hat trick.
Teddy Purcell opened the scoring at 9:27 of the first period with second of the season.
Dan Ellis made 20 saves for Tampa Bay.
