San Diego’s Nick Novak missed a 53-yard field goal with 2:31 remaining in overtime. He made a career-long 53-yarder in the first quarter.

Tebow improved to 5-1 as a starter in 2011 as Denver (6-5) snapped a four-game losing streak to San Diego and won its four straight on the road after losing 11 of its previous 12.

Prater’s 38th consecutive field goal from inside 40 yards kept the Broncos one game behind Oakland in the AFC West.

Ryan Mathews had a career-high 137 yards rushing for San Diego (4-7), which has lost six straight for the first time since dropping its final nine games in 2001. The Chargers’ last victory was 29-24 at Denver on Oct. 9.

Prater’s 24-yard field goal with 1:34 left in regulation tied the game at 13 and was made possible by a 39-yard pass from Tebow to Eric Decker on third-and-10 from the Denver 25.

Willis McGahee rushed for 117 yards and Tebow finished 9-of-18 passing for 143 yards with a touchdown and added 67 on the ground.

The Chargers took a 10-0 lead in the second quarter when Philip Rivers and Antonio Gates hooked up for a 6-yard touchdown pass.

Decker moved into a tie for fourth in the NFL with his eighth touchdown catch – an 18-yarder with 55 seconds left in the half – to close the gap to 10-7.

The teams traded field goals in the third quarter,

Novak also missed from 48 yards in the fourth which would have put San Diego in front 16-10.
