Texas jolts No. 8 Baylor on Domingue FG

AUSTIN, Texas -- Trent Domingue nailed a 39-yard field goal with 46 seconds to play to lift Texas to a 35-32, come-from-behind victory over No. 8 Baylor on Saturday in Big 12 play at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.
The Longhorns drove 58 yards in seven plays to set up Domingue's winning kick, with most of the yardage coming on a 38-yard pass from Shane Buechele to Armanti Foreman.
Baylor had a final chance to win but had no timeouts. Quarterback Seth Russell was stopped on two scrambles, using most of the clock and allowing the Longhorns to hold on.
Buechele passed for 291 yards, two touchdowns and one interception for Texas (4-4, 2-3 Big 12). Running back D'Onta Foreman rushed for a career-high 250 yards and two touchdowns on 30 carries, becoming the first Texas back to gain more than 1,000 yards in a season since Jamaal Charles in 2007.
Russell passed for 226 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 138 yards and another score to lead Baylor (6-1, 3-1). Terrance Williams added 180 yards on 24 carries for the Bears, who rushed for 398 yards.
Texas cut Baylor's lead to 34-32 on a 7-yard touchdown pass from Buechele to little-used tight end Andrew Beck with 7:08 to play, but backup quarterback Tyrone Swoopes, running the Longhorns' power "18 Wheeler" formation, was denied on a two-point conversion run that would have tied the game.
Russell put Baylor on the board on its first drive, reeling off a career-long 50-yard touchdown run untouched through the left side of the Texas line. It capped a 75-yard, six-play drive and set the early tone for the presumed offensive shootout.
Buechele responded with picture-perfect 40-yard bomb for a touchdown to Armanti Foreman to culminate an eight-play, 88-yard march to tie the game at 7-7 at the 11:19 mark of the first quarter.
Texas then took advantage of a P.J. Locke interception with a 37-yard touchdown run by D'Onta Foreman on the ensuing snap, handing the Longhorns a 14-7 lead. It was the first time this year that Texas scored a touchdown off a turnover.
Baylor answered a minute and a half later on a 20-yard TD pass from Russell to Ishmael Zamora as the two teams combined for four touchdowns in the first five and a half minutes of the game.
The Longhorns regained the lead at the 8:43 mark of the second quarter when Baylor guard Blake Blackmar was flagged for holding Texas' Paul Boyette Jr. in the end zone for a safety and a 16-14 advantage. The safety came one play after a 51-yard pass from Buechele to Armanti Foreman was short-circuited when the Bears' Jameson Houston stripped the receiver and recovered on the Baylor 2-yard line.
On the ensuing drive, Texas marched 66 yards in six plays capped by D'Onta Foreman's 9-yard touchdown run, giving the Longhorns a 23-14 advantage at the 6:35 mark of the second quarter. The key play on the drive was a 40-yard Buechele-to-Collin Johnson pass one snap after backup quarterback Tyrone Swoopes fumbled and recovered the loose ball while playing running back.
The Bears crept to within 23-21 on a nifty 9-yard, back-shoulder scoring pass from Russell to K.D. Cannon with nine seconds to play in the second quarter at the end of an 81-yard, 13-play march that took 4:09 off the clock.
The halftime stats were virtually even. Baylor had 308 yards of total offense on 48 plays to Texas' 306 on 44 snaps. The Bears outrushed Texas 156-138, but the Longhorns had 164 yards passing to Baylor's 152.
Texas added to its lead on its first drive of the third quarter, using a 40-yard run by D'Onta Foreman to set the table for a 25-yard field goal by Domingue and a 26-21 advantage.
But Baylor found its stride again, marching 78 yards in 10 plays to a 2-yard TD run by Williams that pushed the Bears back in front at 28-26 with 8:21 to play in the third quarter.
A Chris Callahan 25-yard field goal at the 2:16 mark of the third quarter boosted the Baylor lead to 31-26. Callahan converted another one, this time from 24 yards out, with 8:54 to play to expand their Bears' lead to 34-26.
NOTES: Texas left four starters on the bench -- linebackers Malik Jefferson and Anthony Wheeler, defensive end Charles Omenihu and left guard Patrick Vahe -- for its first possessions. Both Jefferson and Vahe were preseason All-Big 12 picks. ... Saturday's showdown was the 106th meeting all-time between Texas and Baylor. The Longhorns now holds a 76-26-4 edge over the Bears, including a record of 46-10-2 all-time in Austin. ... It took two hours, 29 minutes to play the first half. ...
