Backup quarterback Jalan McClendon was used in specialty situations and ran for a pair of first-half touchdowns as North Carolina State defeated Old Dominion 49-22 on Saturday night at Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh, N.C.

McClendon also threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to tight end Thaddeus Moss.

Starting quarterback Ryan Finley threw three touchdown passes, completing 24 of 28 passes for 281 yards.

Finley had 19- and 4-yard scoring passes to fullback Jaylen Samuels. The first of those helped the Wolfpack to a 21-3 halftime lead.

Senior running back Matt Dayes, a senior, eclipsed the 2,000-yard rushing mark for his career by picking up 71 yards on 14 carries for N.C. State (2-1), which won the two previous meetings between the teams in each of the past two seasons.

The Wolfpack managed 158 yards on the ground, failing to eclipse the 200-yard rushing mark for the first time in six games dating to last season.

Old Dominion (1-2) was limited to 63 yards of total offense in the first half, but the Monarchs struck for a touchdown on David Washington's 21-yard pass to receiver Zach Pascal early in the third quarter.

Washington and Pascal hooked up on a 20-yard scoring pass play in the fourth quarter.

Washington connected on 16 of 26 passes for 200 yards. Running back Jeremy Cox ran for 91 yards on nine carries, including a 65-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.
