Virginia Tech 34, William & Mary 9: Junior Michael Brewer completed 23-of-30 passes for 251 yards and two touchdowns in his first career start, propelling the Hokies over the visiting Tribe.

Another Virginia Tech player making his college debut, freshman running back Shai McKenzie, carried nine times for 106 yards and scored on a 39-yard touchdown carry. Junior J.C. Coleman added a short touchdown run in the second half for the Hokies (1-0).

Virginia Tech limited William & Mary (0-1) to 193 yards and halted 11 of 12 third-down conversion attempts in preventing the Tribe from reaching the end zone. The Hokies sacked William & Mary quarterback Steve Cluley five times, including two by senior linebacker Chase Williams.

Brewer, a graduate of Texas Tech who transferred this summer, was efficient from the start as he directed an 84-yard scoring drive on Tech’s first possession. After scrambling for 16 yards on third-and-12 to keep the drive alive, Brewer threw a 13-yard touchdown pass on third-and-10 to give the Hokies the lead for good.

After William & Mary pulled to within 7-6 on a pair of field goals from senior John Carpenter, Brewer threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to freshman tight end Bucky Hodges. The Hokies' rushing attack kicked into high gear in the second half and finished with 222 yards.
