Pittsburgh 14, Virginia 3:
Tom Savage threw for 191 yards and a touchdown as the host Panthers took advantage of a pair of turnovers to knock off the Cavaliers.

James Conner added a rushing touchdown and freshman Tyler Boyd caught seven passes for 111 yards for Pittsburgh (3-1, 2-1 ACC), which overcame three of its own turnovers with a strong defensive effort.

David Watford went 15-of-37 for 123 yards but could not get his team in the end zone as Virginia (2-2, 0-1) dropped its fourth straight conference opener.

The Panthers had trouble moving the ball early but got strong field position thanks to a pair of turnovers and ended up with two first-quarter touchdowns. Dominique Terrell fumbled a punt at the Cavaliers’ 19-yard line to set up Conner’s 6-yard rushing score and Watford fumbled at his own 18-yard line later in the period, leading to Savage’s 15-yard touchdown pass to Devin Street.

Savage was intercepted twice in Pittsburgh territory but Virginia failed to gain a first down after either turnover. The Cavaliers finally got on the board with Ian Frye’s 32-yard field goal in the third quarter but were stopped on fourth-and-goal with 3:30 left in the game and could not keep the Panthers from converting a first down on the ensuing possession.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Devin Street finished with four catches for 58 yards. He needs one more reception to tie Antonio Bryant for second on Pittsburgh’s all-time list. … The teams combined for just 73 rushing yards on 68 attempts. … Watford did not throw an interception for the first time this season. The sophomore remains at three touchdowns and six interceptions in the young campaign.
