No. 4 Stanford 34, Army 20: Kevin Hogan threw for 188 yards and three touchdowns as the visiting Cardinal survived a slow start to knock off the Black Knights in the first meeting between the teams since 1976.
Hogan completed 11-of-18 passes and Tyler Gaffney ran for 132 yards and scored twice for Stanford (2-0), which has won 10 straight games dating back to last season. The Cardinal trailed 6-0 before recording a first down, but scored on four straight possessions before halftime and took charge after a big turnover in the third quarter.
Terry Baggett had 96 rushing yards and one of Army's six receptions for another 16 yards. Larry Dixon had a 15-yard touchdown run and A.J. Schurr threw a touchdown pass to Edgar Poe in the final minute for the Black Knights (1-2), who were aiming for their first win against a ranked opponent since 1972.
Hogan hit Michael Rector for a 26-yard touchdown late in the first quarter to give Stanford a 7-6 lead and had a 46-yard scoring connection with Ty Montgomery on the first play of the next possession. Jordan Williamson sandwiched a pair of field goals around Dixon's score to put the Cardinal up 20-13 at halftime.
Army drove into Stanford territory midway through the third before an Angel Santiago fumble gave the ball back to Hogan, who soon found Gaffney from 23 yards out to make it 27-13. The Black Knights intercepted Hogan in the end zone in the fourth, but were stopped on fourth down moments later and Gaffney pounded in a 1-yard touchdown run with 9:59 left to put the Cardinal on top 34-13.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Montgomery finished with six catches for a career-high 130 yards. ... Army RB Raymond Maples left the game with a groin injury. ... Rector's TD catch was the first reception of his career.
