Brigham Young 40, No. 16 Texas 21: Taysom Hill rushed for a career-best 259 yards and three touchdowns and Jamaal Williams also set a career high with 182 rushing yards as the host Cougars enjoyed a record night on the ground against the Longhorns.
Brigham Young – a school widely known for its aerial attack over the years – established a school record with 550 yards on the ground, which is also the most Texas has ever allowed. The Cougars (1-1) had 679 total yards while snapping the Longhorns’ 13-game road non-conference winning streak.
Texas (1-1) was overpowered on the ground from the outset as Hill (166) and Williams (108) combined for 274 rushing yards in the first half to lead BYU to a 27-14 lead. Hill, a quarterback, scored on runs of 68 and 20 yards, and Paul Lasike added a 10-yard scoring scamper.
Hill scored on a 26-yard scoring jaunt in the third quarter to boost the lead to 20, and Texas answered with David Ash’s 23-yard touchdown pass to Mike Davis. Justin Sorensen booted his third and fourth field goals over the final six minutes of the third quarter to give the Cougars a 40-21 lead heading into the final stanza.
The start of the contest was delayed for nearly two hours due to pounding rain and a lightning storm that forced LaVell Edwards Stadium to be emptied.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Longhorns RB/WR Daje Johnson only touched the ball twice before leaving with a left ankle injury and Ash left after taking a hard hit with 8:30 remaining in the contest. … BYU’s previous rushing record was 465 yards against Montana in 1958.
