Recap: Clemson 52, South Carolina State 13

No. 5 Clemson 52, South Carolina State 13: Tajh Boyd had a subpar first-half performance, but Cole Stoudt completed 96 percent of his passes and threw three touchdowns in relief of the Heisman Trophy hopeful and the Tigers rolled past the visiting Bulldogs.

One week after accounting for five touchdowns in a statement victory over then-No. 5 Georgia, Boyd was just 14-of-23 for 169 yards with no touchdowns. He did run for a score but only managed 10 yards on his six rushing attempts.

The senior standout got the wind knocked out of him midway through the second quarter, but his junior backup came on and finished 19-of-20 for 143 yards, including a 3-yard TD pass to Charone Peake and scoring strikes to Germone Hopper of 17 and 26 yards. Hopper finished with six catches for 66 yards.

Already holding a 3-0 lead in the first quarter, Clemson scored two touchdowns in 14 seconds - a 1-yard TD run by Boyd followed immediately by a 52-yard interception return for a score by cornerback Martin Jenkins. The Tigers (2-0) added another defensive touchdown in the second quarter on cornerback Darius Robinson's 35-yard interception return.

Both of those interceptions were thrown by Richard Cue, who finished 7-of-18 for 84 yards for South Carolina State (0-2). Tyler McDonald had 138 receiving yards, while Justin Taylor led the Bulldogs with 45 yards rushing on 16 carries.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Clemson rushed for 183 yards as a team, but no individual player had more yards than RB C.J. Davidson's 63 yards on 13 attempts. ... Four different players completed at least one pass for the Tigers. ... Fifteen players caught at least one pass for Clemson, though No. 1 WR Sammy Watkins had only three receptions for 19 yards.
