Recap

Virginia 19, Brigham Young 16: Kevin Parks ran 13 yards for the go-ahead score with 2:36 remaining, one play after an Anthony Harris interception, and the Cavaliers held on to edge the visiting Cougars.

Harris blocked a punt earlier in the second half and picked off Taysom Hill at the Brigham Young 45 before lateraling to Henry Coley, who ran the last 22 yards. Parks, who rushed for 65 yards, busted up the middle for the touchdown and Virginia stopped BYU on the final two series.

Hill dove in from 1 yard away to give the Cougars a 13-12 lead with 6:26 left and, after a fumble on the ensuing kickoff, Justin Sorensen’s 36-yard field goal extended their advantage. Jamaal Williams rushed for 144 yards on 33 carries for BYU, which lost its opener for the first time in seven years.

The game was delayed by lightning for two hours and nine minutes after a scoreless first quarter and the Cougars took the lead in the second. Hill connected with JD Falslev for a 4-yard touchdown with 5:12 left in the second quarter, but Ian Frye’s 53-yard field goal pulled Virginia within 7-3 at halftime.

Harris’ blocked punt came on the first series of the second half and three plays later, David Watford hit Darius Jennings (seven catches, 61 yards) for an 11-yard score in the right corner of the end zone. Virginia extended the lead to 12-7 with 2:38 left in the third when a poor snap by the Cougars resulted in a safety.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Brigham Young WR Cody Hoffman, who had 100 receptions for 1,248 yards last season, missed the game due to a hamstring injury. … Virginia’s Alec Vozenilek had a career-high 13 punts for an average of 41.5 yards. …The Cavaliers have won three of four meetings with BYU, while the Cougars fell to 7-13 all time against ACC opponents.
