UCLA 49, Rice 24:
Johnathan Franklin rushed for 214 yards and three touchdowns on 15 carries and the visiting Bruins scored on three of their first five plays from scrimmage in Jim Mora's UCLA coaching debut.

Franklin scored on runs of 74, 78 and 22 yards.

The Bruins raced out to a 19-0 lead, highlighted by a 72-yard touchdown run from quarterback Brett Hundley on the first play of his collegiate career.

Rice quickly responded with 17 straight points as Taylor McHargue passed for one score and ran for another, but the Owls never got any closer.

UCLA led 35-24 at the half and - after a scoreless third quarter - put the game away, scoring on its first possession of the fourth on a 4-yard touchdown pass from Hundley to Joseph Fauria. Hundley finished 21-of-28 passing for 202 yards and two touchdowns.

McHargue paced Rice's offense, rushing for 95 yards and passing for 172 more. McHargue connected with Luke Willson and Sam McGuffie for short touchdowns.

GAME NOTEBOOK: UCLA finished with 343 rushing yards while improving to 5-0 all-time against Rice. … It was the season opener for both teams. … Rice kicker Chris Boswell connected on a 53-yard field goal. ...
