Connecticut 23, No. 18 Louisville 20 (3 OT): Blidi Wreh-Wilson intercepted Teddy Bridgewater and Chad Christen delivered a 30-yard field goal in the third overtime as the visiting Huskies kept their bowl hopes alive.
Bridgewater drove Louisville 92 yards to tie it on a 6-yard touchdown pass to DeVante Parker with 21 seconds left in regulation and connected with Parker for 25 yards to tie it in the second overtime. Wreh-Wilson made his play in the right corner of the end zone on third-and-goal from the 5 to set up Christen’s winner.
Lyle McCombs totaled 133 yards rushing - his second straight 100-yard output and third of the season - for the Huskies (5-6, 2-4 Big East), who host Cincinnati next Saturday. Nick Williams’ 3-yard run with 10:20 remaining in the second quarter helped UConn build a 10-0 halftime lead.
Bridgewater, who missed the first three series of the second half with an apparent left wrist injury, was helped off the field after a big hit in the first overtime. He threw for 331 yards and two touchdown passes as Louisville (9-2, 4-2) lost a chance to tie Rutgers, who they visit Thursday, for first place.
UConn, which came in ranked ninth in the nation in total defense, limited Louisville to 88 yards in the first half. The Cardinals managed only 13 rushing yards on 13 carries before halftime and finished with 27 in the game.
GAME NOTEBOOK: UConn QB Chander Whitmer left the game with an undisclosed injury in the fourth quarter and was replaced by Johnny McEntee, who threw a touchdown pass to Shakim Phillips in the second overtime. … UConn’s Sio Moore had an interception return for a touchdown in the first quarter overturned by video review, when it was ruled the ball hit the ground. … The Huskies snapped a four-game road losing streak.
