Syracuse 40, Connecticut 10: Ryan Nassib threw for 251 yards and two touchdowns as the Orange scored 27 unanswered points to rout the visiting Huskies.
Jerome Smith rushed for a career-high 133 yards on 19 carries for Syracuse (3-4, 2-1 Big East), which ended Connecticut’s five-game winning streak in this series.
After the Huskies (3-5, 0-3) trimmed the deficit to 13-10 on a touchdown pass from Chandler Whitmer to Ryan Griffin late in the second quarter, Nassib threw his first scoring pass with 1:19 left before the break to extend the Orange’s lead to double digits.
From that point on, Syracuse scored 20 points on four consecutive drives to break the game open, capped off by Nassib’s second TD pass and a 47-yard field goal from Ross Krautman.
Whitmer finished with 296 yards passing to pace Connecticut, which has rushed for a total of 135 yards in conference play.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Syracuse improved to 13-4 under coach Doug Marrone when holding its opponent to less than 20 points. … Connecticut has yet to score more than 14 points in any of its three conference losses. … The Orange’s defense held the Huskies to minus-7 rushing yards and intercepted just their fourth pass of the season.
