Terrance Ganaway rushed for 200 yards and five touchdowns Thursday as No. 16 Baylor outlasted Washington in a 67-56 shootout at the Alamo Bowl in San Antonio.
In a game that rewrote the FBS bowl game record book for offensive power, Baylor (10-3) clinched its first 10-win season since 1980 by scoring 21 points in the first quarter, then rallying with a 29-point third quarter after falling behind by 18 points.
The two teams combined for 1,397 yards and 17 touchdowns, setting FBS bowl game records. The 123 combined points fell just short of the 125 points scored by Marshall and East Carolina in the 2001 GMAC Bowl, but that was a double overtime game.
Washington quarterback Keith Price threw for four touchdowns and rushed for three scores, finishing with 438 yards passing. His 8-yard run with 9:40 left gave the Huskies (7-6) a 56-53 advantage.
But Ganaway capped a five-play, 70-yard drive with his fourth touchdown of the night, a 4-yard run with 8:15 to go that pushed the Bears ahead 60-56. Washington drove to the Baylor 39, but Price’s fourth-down pass to Kasen Williams fell incomplete.
Ganaway iced the victory for Baylor with a 43-yard touchdown run with 2:28 left.
Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III passed for 295 yards and a touchdown, and rushed for a score for Baylor. Tevin Reese added 101 yards rushing, as three Bears rushed for more than 100 yards. Jarred Salubi rushed for 101 yards and two scores.
Baylor trailed 42-24 one minute in the third quarter, but outscored the Huskies 28-7during the next 13:02. Ganaway fueled the comeback, rushing for touchdowns of 89, 1 and 1 yard in the quarter. His third touchdown of the quarter, with 58 seconds left, pushed Baylor ahead 53-49.
Down 21-7 after one quarter, the Huskies exploded for 28 unanswered points in the second quarter. Price threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to James Johnson, a 1-yard touchdown pass to Devin Aguilar, and rushed for a 15-yard score.
Chris Polk scored on a 56-yard run with 31 seconds left before halftime, giving the Huskies a 31-21 lead. Aaron Jones’ 42-yard field goal on the final play of the first half brought the Bears within 35-24, but Price hit Jermaine Kearse on an 80-yard touchdown pass one minute into the third quarter.
Kearse finished with 198 yards receiving. Polk rushed for 147 yards.
