Freshman quarterback Maxwell Smith threw two touchdown passes in the fourth quarter as host Kentucky beat Mississippi 30-13 on Saturday for its first SEC victory of the season.

The Wildcats (4-5, 1-4 SEC), who trailed 13-10 entering the fourth quarter, surged ahead 16-13 on Smith’s 38-yard touchdown pass to La’Rod King with 12:22 remaining. Smith’s 56-yarder to King late in the fourth quarter set up his 8-yard touchdown pass to Gene McCaskill with 2:49 left to extended the lead to 23-13.

Smith, who was making his first start, completed 19-of-36 passes for 283 yards. He took over last week for Morgan Newton, who sprained his right ankle. Matt Roark caught seven passes for 116 yards, and CoShik Williams rushed for 112 yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries.

Penalties helped doom the Rebels (2-7, 0-6), who have lost 12 consecutive SEC games amid growing pressure on coach Houston Nutt. Ole Miss committed 11 penalties, including three on one possession late in the fourth quarter with the Rebels trailing 16-13.

Ole Miss quarterback Randall Mackey threw a 21-yard touchdown to Nickolas Brassell with 7:15 left in the third quarter to give the Rebels a 13-10 advantage.
