Southern Mississippi scored 28 unanswered points in the second half, including three straight touchdowns in a 6:13 stretch late in the third quarter en route to a 48-24 victory over visiting Rice on Saturday.
Quarterback Austin Davis threw three touchdown passes and rushed for another, and Kendrick Hardy rushed for 172 yards and a 47-yard touchdown for Southern Mississippi (4-1, 1-1 Conference USA).
The Golden Eagles trailed 24-20 in the third quarter before Davis' 1-yard run started the run. Davis' 23-yard pass to Ryan Balentine with 3:13 left finished the scoring.
Southern Mississippi totaled 654 yards of offense and held Rice (1-3, 0-1) to 229, including 67 in the second half.
Davis finished 21-of-33 passing for 284 yards and two interceptions.
Two of Rice's three touchdowns were scored on fumble recovery returns, including a 96-yarder by Xavier Webb early in the third quarter to give the Owls a 24-20 lead.
