Louisville shook off the loss of starting quarterback Will Stein to beat host Kentucky 24-17 on Saturday night to end a four-game losing streak to the Wildcats in the Commonwealth Cup.
Kentucky (2-1) had won 18 consecutive non-conference home games.
Stein went down with an apparent shoulder injury in the first half and was replaced by freshman Teddy Bridgewater, who hit DeVante Parker for a 25-yard touchdown pass with 1:16 left in the first half. That play staked the Cardinals (2-1) to a 14-3 lead.
Bridgewater completed 10-of-18 passes for 106 yards and two touchdowns. He also found Josh Bellamy from 25 yards out to give Louisville a 24-10 lead early in the fourth quarter. Dominick Brown, Louisville’s third-string quarterback, racked up 91 rushing yards on 14 attempts.
Kentucky quarterback Morgan Newton completed 27-of-41 passes for 255 yards, only the second time in his career he has passed for more than 150 yards.
Newton had touchdown passes to La’Rod King and E.J. Fields but it was the rushing offense that failed the Wildcats.
Louisville outgained Kentucky on the ground 181-35, continuing a streak dating back to 1996 that has seen the team that rushes for more yards win the Commonwealth Cup.
