Cody Johnson rushed for two second-half touchdowns and No. 21 Texas came back from a 13-point deficit to beat BYU, 17-16, on Saturday night in Austin, Texas.

Longhorns starting quarterback Garrett Gilbert had an awful beginning to the game, completing just 2 of 8 passes for 8 yards and two interceptions as Texas fell behind 13-0 early in the second quarter.

With the Longhorn fans growing more and more restless and the boos getting louder, coach Mack Brown inserted backups David Ash and Case McCoy midway through the second quarter.

McCoy, the younger brother of Texas legend Colt McCoy, drew the loudest cheers from the fans, but he finished 7 of 8 for only 57 yards. McCoy and Ash split reps the rest of the way, but it was the Longhorns’ running game and defense that won the game for them.

Texas rushed for 120 second-half yards, led by freshman Malcolm Brown’s 68 yards, and the Longhorns’ defense held BYU to only 67 total yards and three points after the break.

BYU quarterback Jake Heaps threw for 192 yards and a touchdown, but his interception on the Cougars’ final drive effectively ended their chances for an upset.

The Longhorns beat BYU for the first time ever and moved to 36-4 in their last 40 September games. BYU hosts in-state rival Utah next week.
