Can you believe wide right again?

A Florida State program haunted in years past by a string of narrowly missed field goals was dealt another cruel blow on Saturday when Dustin Hopkins’ 40-yard attempt on the game’s final play sailed wide right and allowed visiting North Carolina to escape Doak Campbell Stadium with a 37-35 victory.

The loss conversely spoiled an opportunity for the Seminoles (4-2, 6-3) to have wrested control of the ACC’s Coastal Division following losses by N.C. State and Maryland earlier in the day.

North Carolina quarterback T.J. Yates completed 24 of 35 passes for 435 yards and three touchdowns without an interception to lead the ‘Heels to their first-ever win in Tallahassee. Barth had booted field goals of 46 and 31 yards before drilling his game-winning 22-yarder with 59 seconds left.

FSU had gone ahead 35-34 following a botched snap on North Carolina punt that led to a Lonnie Pryor one-yard scoring plunge with 5:49 left.

Quarterback Christian Ponder completed 20 of 30 attempts for 234 yards and three touchdowns to lead the ‘Noles, who have now suffered back-to-back tough losses.
