A week after being trounced by Oklahoma, Florida State bounced back Saturday with an impressive 34-10 win against Brigham Young at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee.
The Seminoles (2-1) outscored BYU 21-0 in the second half. The Cougars (1-2), who were making their first visit to Tallahassee, are 0-4 lifetime against FSU.
Led by quarterback Christian Ponder, Florida State had 430 yards of total offense, 280 coming on the ground. Ponder passed for 148 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 58 yards and another score. Chris Thompson led the Seminoles’ rushing attack with 124 yards on nine carries and a touchdown.
The Seminoles' defense registered eight sacks after not having any in its first two games.
Field goals of 26 and 47 yards by Dustin Hopkins and an 83-yard touchdown run by Chris Thompson staked Florida State to a 13-0 lead. Ty Jones ran for 96 yards and a touchdown, and Bert Reed caught nine balls for 88 yards.
BYU closed the gap to 13-10 at halftime on a 29-yard field goal by Mitch Payne and a 4-yard touchdown pass from Jake Heaps to Cody Hoffman just before the break.
Ponder connected with Ty Jones on a 2-yard scoring pass to give Florida State a 20-10 lead, and Ponder’s 1-yard touchdown run stretched the lead to 27-10 late in the third quarter.
