Andrew Luck threw a pair of touchdown passes and the Stanford defense shut out UCLA 35-0 in the Pac-10 opener for both teams at the Rose Bowl Saturday night.

Stanford (2-0) scored on its second possession as Luck hit Ryan Whalen on a 16-yard pass in the corner of the end zone. Nate Whitaker then booted field goals of 23 and 21 yards as the Cardinal took a 13-0 lead over the Bruins (0-2) at the half.

Owen Marecic capped an 18-play third-quarter drive with a 1-yard run to make the score 19-0. Luck (11-for-24, two TDs) hit Doug Baldwin on the two-point conversion to extend the lead to 21-0.

The Cardinal scored on the next play from scrimmage as Michael Thomas stripped UCLA quarterback Kevin Prince of the ball and returned it 21 yards for the touchdown and put the game out of reach.

Prince (6-for-12, 39 yards) was pulled after the fumble and replaced by Richard Brehaut. The Bruins did not convert a third down until midway through the fourth quarter.

The game was delayed in the third quarter when UCLA tailback Derrick Coleman was injured after carrying the ball. He was removed from the field on a stretcher.
