Final Scoring Summary
Recap
For a while, it looked like maybe Tennessee was the team ranked in the top 10 but Oregon eventually silenced the 102,000 at Neyland Stadium with a convincing 48-13 victory.
The Volunteers (1-1) jumped out to a 13-3 lead against No. 8 Oregon (2-0) and suddenly all the talk of youth, rebuilding, and an unproven head coach was lost. Then the wheels came off.
Oregon rattled off 45 unanswered points, three coming on long touchdowns of at least 70 yards. The backbreaker came when Cliff Harris stepped in front of pass floated by Matt Simms and raced 75 yards for the score.
After LaMichael James’ 72-yard touchdown run gave Oregon a 20-13 lead, the Volunteers answered by marching down the field and putting themselves in position to tie the score. The interception by Harris quickly made the game 27-13, though.
Mental errors, poor tackling and turnovers plagued the Vols the rest of the way, drawing the ire of new coach Derek Dooley.
Tennessee running back Tauren Poole ran wild early and finished with a game-high 162 yards on 23 carries. Simms completed 15-of-29 passes for 151 yards.
James had 134 yards rushing to lead Oregon.
Tennessee has little time to lick its wounds. The Vols host Florida on Saturday.
