Maryland stopped Navy quarterback Ricky Dobbs on fourth-and-goal at the 1-yard line with 34 seconds left to preserve a 17-14 victory in Monday's season opener/

The Midshipmen opted to go for a game-winning touchdown rather than try to force overtime with a short field-goal attempt but were stopped just short of the goal line.

Navy racked up more than 400 rushing yards and ran twice as many plays as Maryland, but its final 14-play drive was the fifth time it failed to score inside the red zone.

Maryland freshman kicker Travis Baltz kicked his first career field goal--a 24-yarder with 7:53 remaining--that proved to be the difference.

The Terrapins showcased an explosive running attack early on and scored touchdowns on their first two possessions to take a 14-0 lead.

Da'Rel Scott scored on a 5-yard touchdown run on Maryland opening drive and Davin Meggett, the son of former NFL star Dave Meggett, added a 3-yard touchdown run on the next series. Meggett finished with 105 yards on eight carries.

Navy finally got its triple-option attack rolling later in the second quarter. Andre Byrd put the Midshipmen on the scoreboard with a 10-yard TD run to cut Maryland's lead in half at halftime.
