Preview: Boise State at Hawaii

When: 7:00 PM ET, Saturday, November 12, 2016
Where: Hawaiian Tel Federal Credit Union Field at Aloha Stadium, Honolulu, Hawaii

Boise State is up to No. 22 in the latest College Football Playoff rankings but still doesn't control its own destiny in the battle for the Mountain West Conference. The Broncos will try to at least take care of their own business while keeping an eye on the rest of the conference when they visit Hawaii.

Boise State is attempting to become the highest-ranked Group of Five team at the end of the season and earn a berth in a New Year's Six bowl but has a hard path to that without a Mountain West title, and the Broncos need to win out and have Wyoming drop two of its final three games just to win the Mountain Division and earn a spot in the MWC championship game. "We have to stay focused on what we can control, focus on going and playing our best," Boise State coach Bryan Harsin told reporters of the team's approach to the rest of the season. The Rainbow Warriors are losers of three of their last four games and bottomed out in a 55-0 defeat at West Division-leading San Diego State last week. The smack down dropped Hawaii to 119th out of 128 FBS teams in scoring defense, allowing an average of 38.2 points.

ABOUT BOISE STATE (8-1, 4-1 MWC): The Broncos fell behind in the Mountain Division with a 30-28 loss at Wyoming on Oct. 29 in which they were outgained on the ground 215-159. Boise State made rushing the focus last week against San Jose State and piled up 298 yards on the ground in the 45-31 victory as Jeremy McNichols (159 yards, two TDs) got some help from freshman Alexander Mattison (100 yards, 1 TD). Quarterback Brett Rypien, who did not throw a TD pass and was intercepted once at Wyoming, bounced back as well by posting a season-best 76.2 completion percentage with three TDs and no picks.

ABOUT HAWAII (4-6, 3-3): McNichols and Mattison should not have much trouble finding running lanes against the Rainbow Warriors defense, which is being gashed for an average of 259.2 yards on the ground - 124th in FBS. Hawaii quarterback Dru Brown was intercepted a total of three times in his first eight games and matched that number last week at San Diego State, when he was replaced by Aaron Zwahlen after throwing his third pick. Zwahlen, a freshman, went 3-for-10 for 32 yards and an interception in the first action of his college career.

1. McNichols recorded a TD (rushing or receiving) in 21 straight games.

2. Hawaii committed at least one turnover in each of its last 19 contests.

3. The Broncos took the last five in the series, including a 55-0 home win last season.
