Preview: Duke at Georgia Tech

When: 12:00 PM ET, Saturday, October 29, 2016
Where: Bobby Dodd Stadium, Atlanta, Georgia

There may not be another team in the country more adapt at defending Georgia Tech’s triple-option offense than Duke, which visits the Yellow Jackets on Saturday looking to beat its ACC rival for the third consecutive season. The Blue Devils defeated Army’s triple-option attack earlier this month and held the powerful Georgia Tech rushing game to only 173 yards in last season’s 34-20 home victory.

“They’ve played very well against option teams the last two or three years,” Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson told reporters Monday, as the Yellow Jackets look to snap a three-game skid against ACC competition. The Blue Devils have yet to win a league game but pushed fifth-ranked Louisville in their last contest Oct. 15, pulling within three points in the fourth quarter before falling 24-14 against the nation’s top scoring team. Duke did not commit a turnover against the Cardinals after recording 18 in its first six games, a trend Duke coach David Cutcliffe told reporters Monday must continue against Georgia Tech. “You can’t make very many mistakes,” Cutcliffe said. “They’re a team that maximizes a game in their favor if you do.”

ABOUT DUKE (3-4, 0-3 ACC): Redshirt freshman Daniel Jones – who passed for two touchdowns against Louisville – continues to settle in at quarterback for the injured Thomas Sirk, ranking seventh in the ACC in total offense while passing for 1,584 yards. Running back Jela Duncan is 27 yards shy of becoming the sixth Blue Devils player to record 2,000 rushing yards. Duke faces its third consecutive opponent averaging 200-plus rushing yards per game: the Blue Devils held Army to 165 yards and allowed 288 against Louisville.

ABOUT GEORGIA TECH (4-3, 1-3): The Yellow Jackets have rushed for 241 or more yards in five of their past six games, and after a slow start to the season are third in the ACC and 22nd nationally in rushing yards per game (234.3). Quarterback Justin Thomas needs 45 passing yards to become the 39th player in Division I/FBS history to achieve 4,000 career passing yards and 2,000 rushing yards. The Yellow Jackets hope linebacker P.J. Davis, who missed the last game Oct. 15 against Georgia Southern with a hamstring injury, will be ready for Saturday.

1. Duke has been outstanding away from home since the start of 2013, going 14-5 in road games (tied with Clemson and Florida State for most away victories in the ACC during that span).

2. The Yellow Jackets already have surpassed last season’s win total (three) and need two victories in their final five games to become bowl eligible.

3. Blue Devils CB Breon Borders has 12 career interceptions, fifth in the country among active players.

PREDICTION: Georgia Tech 21, Duke 17
