Preview: Massachusetts at South Carolina

When: 12:00 PM ET, Saturday, October 22, 2016
Where: Williams-Brice Stadium, Columbia, South Carolina

South Carolina brings the nation’s lowest-scoring offense into Saturday’s home game against Massachusetts, which explains why coach Will Muschamp is considering yet another change at quarterback. Neither senior Perry Orth nor freshman Brandon McIlwain has taken control under center, leading the Gamecocks to at least think about starting freshman Jake Bentley.

“We have a good plan heading into Saturday,” Muschamp told reporters on Tuesday, adding that he will not announce who is starting despite the fact Bentley has gotten more repetitions at practice this week. The Gamecocks are averaging 14 points per game, but they will not be the only offensively challenged team on the field Saturday. UMass averages just 317.3 yards, ranking 123rd in the nation - three spots ahead of South Carolina. The Minutemen have pushed SEC foes this season, trailing Florida by three points after three quarters and Mississippi State by seven in the second half before losing both games.

ABOUT MASSACHUSETTS (1-6): The Minutemen are in their first season as an FBS independent and have lost four in a row, allowing an average of 42.5 points during the skid while surrendering 690 yards in a 56-28 setback against Louisiana Tech last week. Andrew Ford threw for 268 yards in that contest, completing his first 11 passes. Tight end Adam Breneman (35 receptions) and running back Marquis Young (4.6 yards per carry) are having good seasons, but UMass has allowed at least 24 points in all six of its defeats.

ABOUT SOUTH CAROLINA (2-4): Coming off a bye week, the Gamecocks hope to snap their three-game losing streak. Orth passed for 288 yards in a 28-14 loss to Georgia on Oct. 9, but he and McIlwain have combined to throw more interceptions (three) than touchdowns (two). Defensive end Darius English ranks second in the SEC and ninth nationally with six sacks.

1. Should Bentley start, he would be the fifth different starting quarterback for South Carolina since the start of 2015.

2. Gamecocks K Elliott Fry is 11 points shy of Collin Mackie’s school record (330, 1987-90).

3. South Carolina is the only FBS school that has not played a game in which one of the teams has scored 30-plus points.

PREDICTION: South Carolina 37, UMass 10
