No. 13 Creighton 77, Akron 61: Doug McDermott scored 30 points and went 6-of-8 from 3-point range as the Bluejays defeated the visiting Zips.
McDermott had posted his sixth consecutive 20-point outing by halftime and Grant Gibbs recorded eight assists for Creighton (9-1), which also got 10 points from Gregory Echenique.
Nick Harney scored 14 points and Zeke Marshall added 12 for Akron (4-3), which dropped to 0-25 all-time against ranked opponents.
The Zips led 14-11 after Marshall’s basket with 14:10 left in the first half before the Bluejays reeled off nine consecutive points to take the lead for good. Another 9-0 spurt pushed Creighton’s lead to 12 and the Bluejays led 43-31 at halftime.
The lead reached 15 on a dunk by Echenique with 16:55 to play before Akron used an 8-2 run to cut its deficit to nine. The Blue Jays answered with a 15-4 run with McDermott and Austin Chatman hitting back-to-back 3-pointers to make it 68-48 with 8:25 remaining.
GAME NOTEBOOK: McDermott has two 30-point outings this season and nine in his career. … Akron was just 4-for-17 from 3-point range. The Zips were averaging 9.8 3-pointers entering the contest. … Gibbs has 66 assists and just nine turnovers.
