St. John’s 58, Fordham 47: JaKarr Sampson scored 12 of his game-high 16 points in the second half as the Red Storm rallied from a second-half deficit for the fourth time in the last six games to defeat the Rams at Madison Square Garden.
D’Angelo Harrison scored 14 points and 6-9 freshman Chris Obekpa added seven points and a school-record 11 blocked shots as St. John’s (7-3) won for the fifth time over the last six games.
The Red Storm trailed 27-24 at intermission but tied the game at 38 midway through the second half and forged ahead for good on a pair of free throws from Sampson.
Following an exchange of baskets and a free throw from Harrison, Sampson and Harrison carried St. John’s down the stretch as they combined to score 18 of the final 20 points – including the final nine – as the Red Storm pulled away.
Ryan Canty finished with 15 points and a career-high 16 rebounds to lead Fordham (1-8).
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Red Storm finished with a school-record 15 blocked shots. ... St. John’s shot a season-low 32.8 percent from the field – the third straight game it has failed to reach 40 percent. … Fordham shot a season-low 28.8 percent from the field and hit just three of its 21 attempts beyond the arc, also its worst performance of the season.
