No. 20 New Mexico 75, Southern California 67: Hugh Greenwood scored a season-high 17 points as the Lobos overcame a hot start by the visiting Trojans to remain unbeaten.
Greenwood, a 6-3 sophomore guard from Australia, matched his career high with five 3-pointers on nine attempts. Alex Kirk, a 7-foot freshman forward for the Lobos, finished with 13 points and 13 rebounds and Kendall Williams had 13 points and nine assists for New Mexico (9-0).
All five starters scored in double figures for USC (3-5) which lost its fourth straight game. Eric Wise scored 14 points, Byron Wesley and Dewayne Dedmon had 12 apiece and J.T. Terrell and Jio Fontan added 11 apiece.
USC made seven of its first eight field-goal attempts and 12-of-16 to take a 30-21 lead with 7:23 remaining in the first half. The Trojans cooled off from there, however, making 15-of-35 the rest of the way.
The Lobos closed the first half on a 22-4 run to go up by nine, then extended their lead to as many as 17 points in the second half. They went scoreless for six minutes, however, allowing the Trojans to trim the lead to five with 2:18 remaining. Williams sank a 3-pointer on New Mexico’s next possession to extend the lead back to eight.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The 43 points were a season high in the first half for New Mexico. … USC’s last four opponent’s entered Wednesday a combined 25-4. … New Mexico shot 12-for-58 (20.7 percent) from 3-point range in its previous three games but improved to 11-for-24 (45.8 percent) against the Trojans.
